Winner of Scots Singer of the Year 2018 and 2023, and Musician of the Year 2021 – the first singer to do so – at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards, Aberdeenshire folksinger Iona Fyfe has become one of Scotland’s finest young ballad singers, and has been described as “one of the best Scotland has to offer.” (Global-Music.de).
She has toured throughout the UK, Poland, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Canada, US, and Australia, and performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as part of the World Premiere of Disney Pixar’s “Brave in Concert” at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. In 2018, Iona performed at Interceltique Festival De Lorient where she was described as “a Scottish folksinger, magical and charismatic.” (Rolling Stone, France). She was nominated for “One to Watch,“ and “Best Live Performance” at Sunday Herald Scottish Culture Awards 2018, was a finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year for 2017 and 2021, and won the 2017 Molloy Award at Birmingham Irish Trad Fest.
Iona graduated from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a first-class honours degree in Traditional Music, and holds an FLCM Diploma (Fellow of London College of Music, equivalent to a Masters) in Traditional Voice from London College of Music. She delivers Scottish traditional songs in the Doric dialect in a very emotive, powerful way, and is a fierce advocate for the official recognition of the Scots Language. Iona is a fine exponent of the Doric dialect, winning the title of Performer of the Year at the Scots Language Awards 2020. Iona also sits on the boards of several respected folk and university organizations, and has the credentials and street “cred” as a Scottish cultural music ambassador through her music.
Iona will be performing a rare solo show, accompanying herself on piano; at her few solo shows last year, several sold out, and people were held spellbound by the purity of her voice.
